Really? I’m suddenly supposed to feel shame for enjoying a comedy that follows a worst-case scenario of our society because an opening scene takes a stab at the breeding habits of intellectuals and their counterpart?

Doesn’t Gawker have entire blogs devoted to the elitism that is intellectualism? What do they consider their political hit-pieces?

Regardless it wasn’t a rich-poor fight, it was a good-decision bad-decision fight, they fact that this reader couldn’t see past it and made it about economics tells me the writer is not as smart as they think they are.

Now this writer would come back at me with “bad decisions don’t make you poor, there are plenty of rich people who make unwise decisions.”

Correct, and they have the wealth to offset those bad decisions. But again, why is this about money?

It’s obvious there are many rich, but stupid people in the future of idiocracy. How did they get their money if they were so stupid and this theory that poverty=stupidity is so pervasive in the film?

Here’s the truth of that scene, a couple who plans, budgets, goes to college and believes in long-term processed and well-conceived plans are the way to get ahead are out bred by people looking for instant gratification.

But really, at the end of the day, it’s a comedy and a stupidly funny one at that. ‘This was not the satire you were looking for’

If we want to discuss eugenics, why is it that only white people can save the universe in Star Wars?

Just read through that article. Between that and all the other trash on every single Gawker site, I think I’m just gonna stick to Oppo...

I love and loathe that movie. I love it because it’s hilarious, and loathe it because I don’t see it as worst case scenario, I see it as a pretty real possibility in a lot of aspects.

Um, Lando Calrissian, Nien Num, Admiral Ackbar, Mace Windu, Finn, those squid headed jedi, yoda, etc. etc.

Let’s also not forget that ALL of the people working to destroy the Rebels/Resistance were/are white. All of them.

The genius of Idiocracy (that I didn’t see the first few viewings) is that it was more of a present-day satire than a dystopian future comedy. You can tell a lot about a person’s perspective on life based on how they viewed the film. Putting it into a dystopian future helps us alleviate the sting of the satire.

I also sort of enjoyed Disney’s version of the movie, which they called Wall-E. Now let’s go on a tirade about fat people.

There’s no shortage of good articles and writers on the Gawker network. Good coverage, facts, etc.

Then you have the “other stuff” which is written to spark “conversation”. Call it clickbait, or outrage farming, or whatever. Just there to drive viewership.

Make a post that basically says “you know that thing that statistically 85% of you all like? IT SUCKS” and watch the traffic roll in. Make it about money, or politics, or race, or diet, or medical care, etc. Pick a hot topic and have at it. Make sure to pass judgement about your readers.

Same here. I don’t even have a twitch of curiosity to go read the article y’all are talking about. Gawker disappointed me every time I clicked on it.

It is a Gawker piece. They don’t care if it’s Pulitzer Prize worthy or total garbage. All they care about is click numbers so they can sell advertising spots for as much money as possible. Gawker frequently portrays capitalism, conglomerates, and conservatives in a bad light, yet at their core, Gawker is nothing more than a corporation trying to maximize profit for share holders.

I’m not going to look for the article because it doesn’t deserve the page view, but I’m guess it was written by a faux intellectual who thought they were being “edgy".

I haven’t seen much of that movie outside the opening scene and some memes, but there’s something to be said regarding the increasing restrictions on access to halfway decent sex ed and birth control in the US and the impact of unplanned pregnancies on the lives of the poor perpetuating the cycle of poverty. This in no way means that everyone who has an unplanned pregnancy is “stupid,” nor does it mean that stupid parents only have stupid children and smart parents only have smart children. The unfortunate fact remains that the worse off you are, the worse off your kids are likely to do in comparison to kids from wealthier families who can afford every support system in the world, even if the children themselves are equally smart. http://www.businessinsider.com/parents-determ…

Basically it’s cruel to think of it as a “documentary” and using it as a vehicle to mock those who are already economically disadvantaged, but enjoying a work of fiction is just that.

Could have not said it better myself. I’m only disappointed that I can’t get Notsure as an email or screen name anywhere as they all have been claimed long ago.

As time goes on, I find myself more and more disgusted by the Gawker network. About 6 months ago I decided I was only going to click on articles on Deadspin, Jalopnik, and Oppo. Then Albert Burneko went full commie so I avoid Deadspin for the most part. Then Jalopnik started becoming a click-though site for the likes of Alissa Walker and I now find that I don’t go there as much either. My last hope is Oppo...

I made the mistake of reading a handful. I’ve changed my life for the better by avoiding Gawker articles altogether, and limiting my exposure to FP articles.
